Self and Social work

'If one can can take care of oneself, only then can we take care of others'.

Social service is regarded highly in today's society. Education curriculum all over the world, extols the nobility of serving our society.

On the other hand, social workers lead a meager and poor life. After teaching the youth about the importance of social work, the society gives few avenues leading directly into social work. The path to a career in social work can be lackluster and rugged.

The industrialized world today rewards self-interest and self-investment. One is supposed to learn the ticks of the trade to survive and thrive in the industrialized world. There are very few avenues for emotion and care on such a path.

The dichotomy in the messages we get about the importance of social work and the real world can be confusing. We just have to find a way to pour our humanity into whatever work we get.

I think that taking care of oneself is the way to graduate someday to taking care of others. No one cannot do everything in the world, but we all can do our little part. There is greatness in little acts done with care and love. However, I long to contribute directly in a social sphere.
